Music Review: Masego - Yebo/Sema
Release Date: November 13, 2020
Masego is a Jamaican-American artist who has been making international waves ever since his hit collaboration “Tadow” with FKJ. He released “Yebo/Sema” visualizer on May 20, 2021 from his latest EP “Studying Abroad” which has garnered much attention globally since its release back in November 2020.
“Yebo/Sema '' talks about Masego’s experience performing in South Africa, where he built a beat on stage, from scratch. He had the crowd chanting “Yebo”. He did the same in Kenya saying ‘'Sema’'. “Yebo/Sema” is an upbeat, dance song, with light-hearted, positive vibes. The song genre is a mix of Jazz fusion, RnB and Afrobeat. The song also features moments of Jamaican Creole/Patois in a sample-style that has also been used by many international acts such as the likes of Rihanna and Drake when the duo sampled Popcaan’s “Love Yuh Bad” and PartyNextDoor with his hit “Not Nice” which samples Vybz Kartel.
The visualizer shows Masego in the desert sitting on a mat with different instruments around him; instruments played in “Yebo/Sema” such as the saxophone, and percussion instruments. Overall, the visual adds a complementing layer of depth to the original audio release and both have resonated and will continue to resonate especially well with Masego fans from the continent of Africa.
